In the light of the translation between Arabic, Turkish, the languages of the European Union and Hebrew, the mapping questions the reality of our exchanges, today and over the last 20 years. It brings into light the crucial role of the translation of works of imagination and thought (literature, human and social sciences, theater, youth literature) in the development of interculturality, while highlighting the many economic, cultural and political difficulties. It paves the way for a structuring Euro-Mediterranean Programme for translation, based on substantiated knowledge, both in terms of figures, hitherto non-existent, and on observation practices.

The general conclusions are based on 69 studies by pairs of languages and by themes (Human and Social sciences, literature, youth literature, theatre) and on ten thematic overviews. The recommendations are destined for stakeholders in the Euro-Mediterranean cultural Strategy and the European Neighbourhood Policy on its ‘Euro-Mediterranean’ side; those responsible for the cultural policies of the member states of the Union for the Mediterranean; national or private programmes of support for translation; agents in the chain of translation, that is to say, translators, associations of translators, publishers, bookshops, libraries, the media.
